Monday with Mark Evershed

I spent some time on Saturday morning with Mark Evershed and here's what transpired.

  1. Man, that was so good!

I'm one of those who is guilty of seeing S&T in every centered swing. I think it's because until listening to the S&T DVD's, I was never introduced to the concept of keeping some pressure on the left foot. It was always "Move all your weight back, then move all your weight forward." I didn't have the luxury of learning from someone like Mark Evershed.

I have since gotten involved with Lynn Blake and Alignment Golf. Lynn teaches many of the same principles, and you can see it in his motion, which is my own personal model. The pattern I try to mimic.

I think I was even the one guilty of the comment about Martin Kaymer, who's swing I really admire. Chalk it up to lack of education, not trying to promote a method, even though it's a method I enjoy very much along with many others.

As always, thanks for a GREAT blog!

  2. Kevin,
Don't personalize it. SnT is a good thing for some and it may or may not work for others. I just believe in teaching the person and not the method.
    Thank You for your comments

  3. I guess I take some exception to the comments about SnT.

The reason why it got so much notoriety is because they ushered out the vogue trend of turning well behind the ball in the backswing. I think that Golf Digest used very poorly posed pictures to turn SnT into something it was not, a reverse pivot, so it got a lot of publicity, mostly negative.

The only reason why M+B were upset with Foley is because he was talking negative about the method in the public (smart decision) yet teaching many of the principles in his practice. Thats not cool if you ask me, it would be like trashing TGM yet using flying wedges in your videos.

I am all for advanced concepts in golf teaching as discussed. I can hardly go to WRX now because its the same basic conversation. The Golf Channel is doing nothing for golf instruction.

  4. Hi Greg,
Thanks for the comments, I don't think it's a reverse pivot and I have a lot of respect for both B&P.

I agree whole heartedly, it's wasn't cool. In fact I think Foley probably regrets it. If you watched the Golf Channel piece he was basically showing us his humble side. He also made some comments about other instructors which I thought were out of line (whether they were true or not). I think Foley's still learning and hopefully he can continue to grow and learn from this experience.
With regard to the golf channel, your right on point.
    Thanks Again,
    Ralph

  5. Great exciting golf this weekend at Sherwood!

I've got some thoughts from the tournament that Mark might comment on since he seems to have an inside track on what Tiger is working on.

First, I thought it was interesting that both McDowell and Tiger seemed to have a similar swing rehearsal, kind of a swinging left on plane type of drill? McDowell's swing kept being dogged by the announcers (his bowed wrist at the top etc.), yet I saw a lot of similarities to Trevino, and McDowell leads with his core all the way through, and has a great impact position.......I don't think his success this year is a fluke...look for more from him.

Thoughts on Tiger's swing. Looks much more controlled. Watch out when he dials this stuff in! Here's something I noticed, and would love feedback from Mark. (tell me where I'm wrong, if I am) I see something in his pivot I believe is left over from when he was VERY young and was striving for distance. He would stop the hips before impact and really launch with the shoulders. Over the years, when he timed it right, he would bomb it straight. I see a bit of this still, where he stops the hips just at the point of angular release, just before impact, and launches the shoulders. When I view Hogan, or Trevino from behind, their leading hip continues moving all the way through impact, and the shoulders are smoothly in sync. Tiger, though improving, seems to have trouble when he stops his leading hip, and trys to launch it with his shoulders. (If his timing gets off.) Anyone have any thoughts/opinions on what I think I am seeing?

  6. You guys are right on about Golf Channel. We have to remember that they are about ratings, not about fixing golf swings. Unfortunately more people will watch a show where the host yells at you and talks about a "radical" new swing, then will watch a show about being properly aligned (or any other fundamental). Sad but true.

  7. ralph,

Looking forward to the day when you are interviewing Sean Foley yourself and asking him the questions that Gotham Golf Blog fanatics are eager to ask.

  9. If you want some direct insight into Foley's methods you might try reaching out to Nick Starchuck, often goes by Mystic on the boards, he has worked extensively with Foley over the past couple years. He often posts the great Youtube videos of O'Hair doing drills that he takes himself during a lesson with Foley.

Ralph, this kinda feeds off what Mark E was saying about the technical side of golf instruction, I would not mind if in some of your interviews you got into some more technical questions. Why do these teachers believe certain aspects of the swing. For example Mark in one of his Youtube video's talks about the alignment of the spine at the top prevents the ball from going left, why? Do some of the teachers, such as Slicefixer, want to see a strong grip using a angled hinge (I see that from his students). Especially in the second interviews where all the introductory stuff has already been covered.

Just a suggestion cause I appreciate everything you do.

  10. Thanks for the comments Greg,
I don't necessarily study the various techniques of all the Teachers I interview but from time to time, I give readers a heads up and ask if they may have any questions for the instructors.
