Here's our friend Kelvin Miyahira with an interesting comparison of Zach and Dustin.
Huggy's comments from below:
Just because Kelvin voices over "stalling, stalling, stalling" on Zack Johnson's video doesn't make it so. There are many high speed videos of his swing that show that Zack is not a pivot staller, quite the opposite in fact. The DTL view is much better to see this than a face on. Here's just one of many examples readily available:
With as strong of a grip as he employs and as well synched he is on the downswing, if Zack stalled, he'd hit it left of left.
DJ is much bigger than Zack, much more athletic, probably a lot more fast twitch muscle fiber as he is a good all round athlete in other speed/jumping sports. Those things account much more for differences in distance than their technique, IMO.

I think that both golfers stall their pelvis through impact, but that doesn't explain their difference in driving distance. Also, KM's claim that it relieves pressure on the back makes no sense to me.
ReplyDeleteI think that the three major factors that allow DJ to hit the ball further relate to a i) a longer backswing action, ii) a faster pivot action between P4 and P7 and iii) a longer retention of maximum clubhead lag due to a more active adduction of his right elbow down to its pitch location during the power package slotting phase of his downswing. ZJ has a slower right elbow motion in his early downswing and he therefore loses his right elbow bend too soon and that causes an earlier club release (release of PA#2).
Jeff.
Umm, DJ is about 7 inches taller than Zach. Put 7 inches on a radius and guess what happens? We've all seen that DJ commercial by now where he's dunking and all that. He's just an animal. ZJ's swing is extremely efficient for his athleticism level..which is also quite good, in my opinion. I've never heard that he has any back problems either, but he does have a green jacket.
