The D-PLANE By James Lietz
This video is off the Hook!
It's the best so far.
Here are some of the descriptions of the various technologies patented by Trackman, the fact that it's dealing with such things as multipath leads me to believe that it actually tracks the ball in flight to determine the characteristics as opposed to computing the ballflight based on the impact alignments, using some algorithm.
Here are some of the descriptions of the various technologies patented by Trackman, the fact that it's dealing with such things as multipath leads me to believe that it actually tracks the ball in flight to determine the characteristics as opposed to computing the ballflight based on the impact alignments, using some algorithm.
- Comparing a target direction indicated in an image, e.g. by using a camera, with the ball direction determined by radar.
- Measuring spin rate of sport balls by radar using multiple harmonic spectrum traces.
- Measuring spin axis orientation of sport balls from trajectory measurements by radar.
- Removing multipath signals – for landing spot determination.
- Quantifying golf ball position uncertainty from multipath signal strength.
- Determining, from a multipath signal from a ball in flight, information relating to a surface over which the ball flies.
- Determining a distance from the ball to the radar using the intensity of reflected radiation at that distance and the intensity of reflected radiation at a known distance.
- Determining information relating to a ball in flight from a deviation between expected multipath oscillation and detected multipath oscillation.
- Determining trajectory information from a flying ball on the basis of a radar-based launch position determination.
- Estimating spin frequency from a plurality of equally spaced, symmetric side band frequencies in a radar signal. Including trajectories determined from radar data in images derived from a camera Deriving image data and radar data from an object and providing an altered image wherein the object is rotated.

Slicefixer Update
It has come to my attention that our good friend Geoff Jones aka "Slicefixer", has become the victim of some rogue cyber scam. It's a shame that the there are people in this world that resort to this stuff. Below are the details as posted by Geoff on GOFWRX:

To Golfwrx and it's membership, Well, I don't know what to say fellows, other than I'm SO sorry about this mess. I am TRULY sorry for the problems this situation might have caused some of you. I also feel very foolish and naive to have used the same password for so many different things. I was ripe for the picking for con artists/criminals and they sure took advantage of it. Here is how things apparently went down.... They hacked my Golfwrx account and gained access to my email (which had the same password) and monitored my email for several weeks. In my saved email was the information to hack the website we're building. They used all of this information to set up this con here on Golfwrx. The sad thing is this, they knew a LOT about me, my family, my writings, the apparent demand for our book, etc. They waited till very early yesterday morning to implement their scheme and blocked my access to this site, my AOL email, and my website. I found this out when I received several congratulatory texts early yesterday morning, which obviously had me confused. I then saw that my phone was no longer receiving forwarded emails (it still isn't) and instantly knew something was up. They sent out a mass email to the 2k people in my AOL contacts file as well as the post here on Golfwrx. The scary thing is they knew EXACTLY who NOT to send this solicitation email....my family, in laws, close friends, and even Golfwrx members who are students and close friends. They did their homework.... THANKFULLY several Golfwrx members who had contacted me via text were able to post in the thread to warn others about this fraud. However, it was not soon enough to prevent several fine Golfwrx members from being taken. I spent several hours on the phone and via email last night attempting to get to the bottom of this situation and contact ALL persons I knew had contacted these criminals thinking it was me. I have to thank Ryan of Golfwrx for all his help as well as several Golfwrx members....they know who they are. Fella's, I have no idea the motivation of the individuals involved. At first we thought it was simply to embarrass me and attempt to damage my reputation. Then it became apparent it was an attempt to defraud some passionate golfers out of their hard earned money and CC information. Now, after quite a bit of research, it appears it was a little of both. This was a pretty sophisticated, well researched, and patiently applied fraud. It was not some fly by night operation. The sad thing is it appears to have been constructed and carried out by people who are golfers, understand golfers, are most probably members here, and who are VERY well versed in internet fraud. It's a sad statement about the lack of character and integrity of some people..... Once again, I'm VERY, VERY sorry for this situation and hope nobody was seriously hurt by it. I would like to ask anyone who was involved and thought they were contacting me about the book, whether to purchase or to simply congratulate me, to email me again so that I can apologize to them personally. (the email is now secure and back in my hands) Unfortunately these criminals REALLY fouled up my AOL email account and we're having a very difficult time determining who did contact "me." I have emailed everyone I know contacted me, but, it's apparent they deleted some of the emails. As a result I cannot determine who to contact, etc. In closing, words cannot express my emotions regarding this situation. I'm terribly sorry for all who were affected by this fraud and hope to be able to make up for it in some way in the future. I know I've stated this before in previous postings, I am VERY appreciative of this site and it's membership. Golfwrx came in to my life when I was going through some tough times and the experience here was a true blessing for myself and my family. I will always be very appreciative of this site and the many fine members who inhabit it. Many have turned into great friends to both myself and my family and visit us here several times per year. This community has some fine people involved with it, both in management/ownership and membership, and that is what distresses me the most about this unfortunate situation.
Very Sincerely,
Geoff "Slicefixer"

I asked Hyno Designs to restore a VHS video I had which contained The Ben Hogan ESPN interview. I had forgotten that I had some old Hogan swings on that video, Hyno went ahead and edited the video and created a music video with some of the rare footage I provided. The result is the second video on this post. The first video is from Bradley Hughes Youtube page and it contains Hogan's 1989 interview.

Pressure Point #3, Lag, Norrie Wright and Les Johnson

The following summary was written by D. Laville on one of the forums, it is by far the best I've read on the internet.
Lag is probably the most misunderstood thing in the golf swing. People think that holding the wrist **** or angle between the left forearm and clubshaft is lag. It isn’t, that’s known as a block out. Lag is physics not geometry. The principle of lag is that it keeps the club in a constant state of acceleration. Inertia is the resistance to motion or change. When you start the hands down the club is going to have resistance to this change of direction and motion. This is the start of lag. You want to accelerate the club against this resistance all the way through impact. It should feel as if you’re accelerating the club against it’s own weight. By sustaining the lag through impact you’re keeping the club a state of acceleration that will give the most resistance to impact deceleration caused by the clubhead hitting the ball. Ideally you want to sustain the lag all the way to the both arms straight position which is about 45 degrees past impact. Properly done it should feel as if your release happens after impact. Remember, the release is the period of clubhead acceleration and what you feel as the release is actually the club settling into a state of deceleration. Over acceleration is the nemisis of lag. Acceleration against the club (lag) should be slow and heavy, a steady as she goes motion, a constant nursing of feel. If the hands reach peak speed before impact you’ve over accelerated and since we’re dealing with an angular system the clubhead will over take the hands and you’ll find yourself chasing the club through impact. In The Golfing Machine world we refer to this as clubhead throwaway. Now we'll have a look at Lag, how you create it, sustain it and use it to your advantage. First up we have one of my dearest friends in the world, Mr. Norrie Wright GSED.

Gary Woodland an Analysis By John Dochety
Congratulations to Gary Woodland on his victory this past week. Gary has obviously been working hard with his coach Randy Smith to tighten up some of his weaknesses and it's definitely paying off. After a near miss at the Bob Hope, he came back this weekend and finally closed the deal. Gary is a throwback in a lot of ways, for one he carries a 2 iron, a rare sight on today's tour.
In light of Gary's victory, I've asked our good friend John Dochety to share his thoughts on Gary's swing.
John is in my opinion one of the best in the East, he's learned under some of the greatest Golfing Machine Coaches and has supplemented that with a good deal of quality time spent with Mac O'Grady (Who is definitely one of the top 10 instructors of all time). Besides being a great instructor John is also a top notch human being, he's a lot of fun to be around.
Without any further ado here are John's thoughts:

Hunter Mahan Swing Analysis
Hunter Mahan is perhaps the ideal model for the modern rotary Golf Swing. He's the guy Geoff Jones keeps emphasizing as the ideal for his preferred stroke pattern. Today we're going to have Dan Whitaker provide us with an analysis of Mahan as he sees it.
First Here's his Bio from Wikipedia:
Hunter Myles Mahan (born May 17, 1982) is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. Mahan was born in Orange, California. He had a successful amateur career, winning the 1999 5A Texas State High School Golf Championship while attending McKinney High School and the 1999 U.S. Junior Amateur Golf Championship. After high school, Mahan enrolled at the University of Southern California, where he was named Pacific-10 Conference Freshman of the Year. Mahan only played one year at USC before he transferred to Oklahoma State University, where he was a two-time Big 12 Conference Player of the Year and a two-time first-team All American. Mahan was the runner-up at the U.S. Amateur Championship in 2002, in which he was defeated by Ricky Barnes 2 & 1. He won the Haskins Award in 2003 for outstanding collegiate golfer.

I caught up with our friend Mark Evershed this weekend and we had an interesting conversation. Unfortunately we had a bad connection (Mark had his laptop running on low battery), so it didn't come out too well. There is a slight echo and the picture comes in and out. However I enjoyed Mark's honesty so much that I kept it and decided to air it today. It's not the best, so bear with us.
First I want to listen to Chamblee's analysis of Tiger this weekend (courtesy of Golfwrx). The Chamblee analysis happened after my chat with Mark.
For those interested our friend Wayne Defrancesco has an interesting rebuttal to Brandel on his site WayneDefrancesco.com. (click on the link to be redirected). I think you'll enjoy it.

Tiger Woods/Sean Foley
It's been about a year now since Tiger enlisted the services of Swing Coach Sean Foley (according to Erik J. Barzeski it's been 7 to 8 months). The Jury's still out. But if I were to grade him right now I'd give him a "C".
Don't get me wrong we at Gotham Golf like Sean and hope he's able to "help" Tiger right his ship. The operative word there is "help", because Sean can only explain, demonstrate and hope. Any changes will come from Tiger both mentally, physically and mechanically. Given the fact that as a young man Sean apparently spent time with Gregg McHatton, it makes us root for him to pull this one off.
There's a lot riding on this, despite the fact that there appears to be a sense of parity on tour, parity does not bring ratings. The casual golfer doesn't tune in to watch parity, he/she tunes in to watch dominance whether it's to root for or against. And we haven't seen dominance like the one Tiger provided since Jack Nicklaus. So in a sense this generation of golf viewing public has been spoiled.
A couple of observations;

A couple of observations;
- These changes will not happen overnight despite Tiger's work ethic and dedication, So excessive repetitions aren't going to bring instant results and more than likely will bring frustration.
- His mental state isn't quite there yet, he is struggling to find his rhythm and appears to be on the defensive out there.
- It would behoove Tiger to keep his short game in tact and accept the fact that these changes are going to take time and he will have to rely on his once deft short game to pull him through in the meantime.
- If I were in Sean Foley's camp I would advise him to keep his nose to the grindstone and ignore all the bullshit that's going to be popping up in the various media outlets.

Tiger Woods, the knee and his swing evolution
There is a school of thought out there that believes Tiger's knee problems are a direct result of the stroke pattern he developed with Butch Harmon. While I'm not Butch Harmon's biggest fan, I will say that that notion is utterly preposterous. The knee problems are/were a byproduct of the swing Tiger naturally developed since he was hitting balls at the age of 2 on the Mike Douglas show.
Like many before him Tiger developed a swing which incorporated his natural athletic ability. Attributing his knee injury to faulty technique is ridiculous in my opinion. Tiger ushered in the era of athleticism and physical fitness to the game. His golf swing was a natural athletic motion with few tweaks here and there from instructors along the way. In my opinion a traditional Golf Swing is about the most unnatural move you could make, so repetitive motion is probably what caused Tiger's problems. A "competent" golfer's left knee (for a right handed golfer) will always sustain a great amount of stress both vertically and horizontally. A good analogy would be to compare it with the throwing arm of a major league pitcher.
I'm a big NY Mets fan and remember Doc Gooden when he first came up. The kid was un-hittable until apparently they let his pitch count go to over 100 through 6 innings in the rain at Shea Stadium. The prevailing thought at the time was that that appearance cost him his career, not the fact that he was throwing up to 300 innings a year.
Here are some insights from former Met GM Steve Philips (yes that Steve Philips)
Back then, I believe you'd get your teammate to spit a little chewing tobacco on your throwing arm and rub it in in between innings. Dam those guys were good!!
Okay back to my rant:
The point I'm trying to make is that if the human body is not designed to withstand a Baseball pitching motion it certainly will not withstand Professional Golf swing as intense as Tiger's motion was in his heyday.
What we used to see in Tiger was pure unadulterated athleticism, now we get to see him focus on positions, connection etc. A classic case of Paralysis by Analysis and steering. He use to play to win, left nothing in the bag and focused on scoring. His attitude was, "F...K the knee, I'm winning this tournament and we'll worry about the knee later". Not a bad approach if your goal is to be the greatest ever.
If you consider Malcolm Gladwell's thesis from his book "Outliers", you'd need 10,000 hrs. of practice to master any endeavor, I'm not a gambler but I bet Tiger put in at least 5 times that many hours and possibly as much as 7 to 8 times that amount. Assuming 8 hrs a day, 10,000 hours is 5 years, Tiger's been at it since he was 2. I'll let you do the math. The important point here is, "How many repetitions has that knee had to withstand"?
Let's look at Tiger's swing over the years and focus on the knee. First we have a swing from when he was age 2, another when he was age 4 and then his swing through his Amateur career.
Now let's look at it at later points in his life.
It seems to me that the amount of stress on his knee is no different through out the swings in this video. Tiger's lower body action is a power creating natural idiosyncrasy which he has developed over the years. I wouldn't be surprised if he needed another knee surgery somewhere down the line. It's the nature of the beast and a byproduct of the path he's chosen. Dean Smith is in my opinion the most overrated Coach in NCAA history. The father of the 4 corner offense and the beneficiary of the best recruiting classes ever. I remember the kids from Molloy, Christ the King , Rice and Spellman all leaving to North Carolina to drink the koolaid. Yet with the top recruits in the country year after year he was only able to win 2 NCAAs in a career that spanned forever. Denny Crum at Louisville won the same amount of titles in a 6 year span with far less talent . What does Dean Smith have to do with all this you ask......? .....Mr. Smith will go down in history as the only man that ever stopped Michael Jordan. The analogy here is that trying to restrict Tiger's lower body motion would be the equivalent of what Smith did to Jordan.

Fatigue: The arm was not made to throw a baseball. Every time a pitcher throws a ball he tears fibers in his arm. The throwing motion, even in the cleanest delivery, takes a toll on the arm. The more one throws, the more it starts to wear down the arm. Each arm only has so many bullets, so to speak. Sooner or later every arm will give out.Today we have pitch counts to help prevent injuries, where were those pitch counts when Marichal took on Spahn, and they both pitched complete games for 15+ innings.

Berkeley Rican's pilgrimage to Mecca
![]() |
| Jose F. aka Berkeley Rican |
Our good friend and fellow Gotham Golfer Berkeley Rican aka Jose F., recently made a trip down to Valencia to see Sensei (先生). Here's his account of the day.
I woke up at 3am on a Thursday morning to make the drive down to see Gregg McHatton from Berkeley to Valencia. As I was driving I was thinking to myself "Was I crazy?" It was a 10 hour drive round trip to spend two hours with someone I never met. Why make the trip? Because I really enjoy playing golf well, and I wanted to know how the golf swing worked (a swinger’s motion) and I was hoping with all his experience he could clear up the mystery and show me how to practice properly.
My swing is naturally a swinger’s motion, but I have been experimenting with hitting for the last two years. The problem with experimenting is that if you really don’t understand the difference between swinging and hitting you’ll put yourself on a bad detour. In the few hours I had with Gregg he was all business. He showed me that I was not holding on to the club correctly. I had way too much tension in my hands and arms to let the club drag properly back and through. I thought my pivot was decent, but from the 1st video he took of my swing you can see my arms getting stuck on the follow through. So he got me working on a better turn, and guess what happens if you pivot properly? You magically swing left. After he addressed my pivot, he got me feeling the proper ground forces when a golf club impacts the ground properly. If you can put a hurting on the ground with the club then you can put a hurting on the ball. I was sweeping the ball of the turf instead of driving into the ground. Lots to work on, but at least now I know how the golf swing works and what I need to practice to get better, and the best thing was that I didn’t have to ascend a bunch of mysterious Gnostic levels to get to the hidden mysteries of the golf swing.
Gregg was awesome, and I plan on making that drive down to Valencia again real soon.

Here's Gregg's analysis:
Eventually, I'll share my pilgrimage experience with you. Mine involved getting on a plane and travelling 2000+ miles. If you are looking to do something special for yourself, I highly recommend you consider taking the trip to Valencia.

MP 14s
This one's from our friend and GothamGolfer Mike aka "DeniedHealthCare"
You gotta admire his honesty!
I regret ever losing my 14's. My set was Sandy Lyle's backup set. They are substantially softer than the MP29's. They are also 2° weaker, so be prepared for a higher ball flight. They were originally designed for David Duval when he first came out of Georgia Tech and became all the craze on the Tour. Back in the days when only a few companies paid tee up money, the Mizuno MP14 was the most played iron on tour according to the Darrel Survey.

The Hogan Legacy
Here's a little something from our friend "1tontomato"
The Oakland tournament was a defining moment in Mr. Hogan's career, I'll share my thoughts on that at a later time.

Lee Trevino on Tiger Woods
Here's what Lee Trevino had to say about Tiger Woods.
The following is an excerpt from ESPNDallas. com
By Richard Durrett

DALLAS -- Hall of Famer Lee Trevino still believes Tiger Woods will surpass Jack Nicklaus' record for major victories, but says Woods still has work to do to find his game again.
"My suggestion to Tiger Woods, which I don't know will ever happen, is he's got to look at the film from when he started winning all those tournaments and go right back to what he was doing and get rid of all these people," the 71-year-old Trevino, a Dallas native, said Thursday at a luncheon to promote the HP Byron Nelson Championship on May 23-29 at The TPC Four Seasons Resort and Club Las Colinas in Irving, Texas.
“By "people," Trevino meant instructors. Trevino said that once Woods "gets his mindset straight and quits messing with all these instructors" that his winning form will return.

Woods, 35, has 14 major championships and needs five more to break Nicklaus' record.
I can't help but agree with him. Sounds like what I've been saying all along. If you don't believe me do a search on Tiger Woods on this blog.

Jim McClean
The following question was posed on the Forum:
These types of accolades should be judged on your overall contribution to the game, i.e. research, publications and thesis'. Not some bullshit butt buddy society.
That last statement fits Mr. McClean, Jim in my opinion is always thinking out of the box. He is not ashamed to say that he has taken lessons from some of the top instructors himself. He has spent time with Mr. Kelly, Mr. Doyle, Mr. Ballard and has picked the brains of some of the greatest players in history, including my idol Ken Venturi. In terms of research, Jim's bibliography spans at least 3 decades in the various media outlets (print, Television etc.)
About 20 years ago I went down to Miami amd spent time at Doral, unfortunately Jim wasn't available so I spent 3 days with Mike Lopuszynski. What I noticed about my time there was that there was no "Method Teaching". These guys taught the person in front of them and allowed for variations, the instruction wasn't black and white and they allowed for gray areas.
Besides his contributions as an instructor Jim was/is a top notch player. Here's some footage from our friend Carl Welty of Jim playing the 1972 US Open at Pebble Beach. According to Carl, Jim also played the Masters that Year.
Geoff Jones, in his webinar credited some of Jim's work with helping him develop his philosophies. Below is a video with Jim providing some proof that he was swinging left in the 80's.

Future Top 100's
Who should they be?
Joe C
Here's my answer:
That's the biggest crock ever invented.
Who selects these individuals?
What's the criteria?
What are the credentials of the judges?
How do you do it without leaving anybody out?
In these pathetic selection processes, is anybody actually evaluated on their ability to teach (ie actually judged on giving a lesson)? (NO)
These types of accolades should be judged on your overall contribution to the game, i.e. research, publications and thesis'. Not some bullshit butt buddy society.
Listen to the Petralia interview and you'll hear how he was embarrassed when he was on the list and Tom Kite asked him why Harvey Pennick wasn't.

Model Golf, Gary Koch and Tiger Woods
In a previous post I mentioned meeting Bryon Nelson and how nice a guy he was. During those days I also had the pleasure of meeting Gary Koch. Gary proved to be just as cool as Mr. Nelson. The occasion was the Launch of the New Cleveland line, "The Tour Action" and the death of the Dreaded VAS line. The event was at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan, I believe this was Chelsea Piers inaugural season and the place was rocking. Gary was playing on the Nike tour at the time (in preparation for the Senior Tour) and had just finished going head to head with Casey Martin in The Lakeland Classic (Martin's Lone victory on the Nike Tour). Anyway we had a blast and Gary is as cool in person as he is on TV. He's one of the True Gentlemen in the Game.
Here's an interesting analogy and something I always wondered about. According to Model Golf, Tiger Woods (under Butch Harmon) had highest score against the model ever recorded.
Why would anyone switch??
Let's bring back the Halcyon days

Slicefixer Webinar Part VI

Okay Gotham Golfers, here's the last part of the webinar. Don't yall fret now, we'll be adding plenty of educational webinars in the future. So stay tuned.

Here's a late edit: I received the following comment on Youtube
"Seriously? More of the same I guess with these blog posts. Plenty of Why but absolutely none of the How in any of these slicefixer vids. Isn't that what people are tuning in for...to learn HOW to execute the slicefixer swing a little better? Hats off to 'ya for getting slicefixer to share his knowledge, but goodness gracious, get to the part that gives your readers something they can use without taking the next month to post the remaining videos. Thanks."

It' s scary how the more you give freely .......The more they want.
Amazing
This is obviously not my kind of reader
I guess Geoff should be so benevolent as to reveal his life's work in the form of a 90 minute video free of charge for this guy's viewing pleasure.
HE'S ENTITLED TO IT.... ISN'T HE.....?????

This guy gets more pathetic by the minute:
So are you implying that the posts of these videos are merely a ruse to sell more books? Good shot at smack talk. Let me ask you a question. Doesn't the fact that you have a public blog and actively promote it on the golf forums with links to your "hot of the presses" content (with a donation button nonetheless) signal that your content is in fact FREE? If your intent ISN'T to help people swing a little better, then what is it?
SuperGolfingDude 1 hour ago
I guess it's my job to ensure that he swings better for free...He is entitled to it...........Isn't he?????
