EA Tischler on the "Push Elbow"

Today we have EA Tischler demonstrating what appears to be a valid option to using the Push elbow as described by The Golfing Machine. The stroke pattern is driven by a hand controlled pivot. I applaud EA, because this is the best and clearest demonstration I've seen of this to date. I still think the best way to "Hit" is with a very dynamic pivot and adding the right arm from the release point forward.

Here's EA's synopsis:

Video Synopsis for Gotham Golf Blog

After a recent blog discussion some students asked me to talk about some variations with regard to Hitting techniques with the different Swing Path option and correlating elbow alignments and actions with regard to Power-of-3 biomechanics.  Now, keep in mind this video is relatively brief because it was taken in between golf lessons as some students asked me to briefly clarify some points with regard to their questions.  Certainly a more comprehensive video can be made in the future.  Additionally I showed how it is possible to effectively employ a Hitting action with an elbow-front alignment.  I will post a brief video with some introductory concepts on that topic later on my youtube channel.

In this video I am showing a version of an elbow-back hitting action.  This differs from both of Homer Kelley’s hitting options in the sense of one being employed with a push elbow where the elbow moves out away from the body in what I would describe as a disconnected application and one being employed in an on the side position as used in more fanning application.  I will show there is also an elbow-back application that suits punching in many martial arts applications and is very effective in golf as well.   I would say that as far as biomechanics is concerned my experience has shown that the elbow-back hitting action works very well for golfers that own On-Top Swing path biomechanics.  In my experience I would also say that elbow-side variations (with HK’s punch elbow being one of the possible elbow-side variations) are more suited for golfers owning Side-On swing path biomechanics and that the elbow-front (with HK’s pitch elbow position being one of the elbow-front variations) variations better suited for golfers owning Under Swing Path biomechanics.

It will certainly be argued that these are just opinions or beliefs.  That is fine.  Even if they are, my intention is to add perspective to the process of operating golf strokes and the possibility of alternatives that have yet to be adequately investigated.  So I hope I have provided a somewhat logical and informative alternative for how elbow action can possibly effect hitting as far as the golf stroke is concerned.  You can make up your own mind for how much it makes sense to you.

As you will see in this video I am using an elbow-back application that keeps the hands in-front of the right elbow during the load portion of the backstroke.  Just like in executing a standard punch from the waist in Karate or Tae Kwon Do (well at least very similarly –there are certainly aspects of sameness and difference).   I deliver the action with a down-plane thrusting action as well, qualifying it as a hitting action.  Keep in mind that I am built to most efficiently operate as a golfer employing an Under Swing Path alignment.   But because of the ability for the human body to adapt and operate throughout a wide range of motions I am able to demonstrate a more On-Top version.    Even so, my demonstration will show tendencies away from what one might call the standard On-Top alignments because my body will strive to work more toward an Under attitude even though I am able to demonstrate how my On-Top application works.  It will also show tendencies based on my other biomechanical feature/options such as I own the Shoulder-Slot Swing Slotting option.

Some Time with "The Hat" II

Here's day one with Gregg at Valencia. I flew cross country to work on my eternal chip pitch. I've been at it for 3 years now and I still don't have it down packed. The idea is to work on my impact alignments and minimize compression leakage. I already compress the ball better than most guys I play with but it's still not to the point where I'm wearing a hole on the sweet-spot smaller than a dime.
I'm going to start working on our friend Ernest Dras' slow motion practice technique and incorporating it into my current regiment. To learn more about Ernest's book go to: Thesolarsweetspot.com

Anyway, for those who care I've added some fullswings and drills to the end of the video since Gregg's drills have a way of making people look clumsy and uncoordinated.

US Amateur 2011

This is by far the strongest field I can remember. Henley and English, the Georgia Bulldogs have been eliminated. We still have John Peterson, Tom Lewis, Patrick Cantlay, Peter Uhlein and Jordan Spieth.

Can't wait for today's feature Match, Tom Lewis vs Patrick Cantlay. U.S. vs U.K.

If there's a Dark Horse out there it's New Englander Bobby Leopold, this guys got the Game and the composure to go all the way. He smoked Harris English and doesn't seem fazed by the big names.

If anybody is recording this, I would appreciate a copy. Reach out to me via my email.

The Knudson Machine

Most of you know about my obsession with the techniques of  great ball strikers of all time. Besides Ben Hogan (whose book "Power Golf", I rate among my top five), I would have to say that George Knudson is one of the premiere ballstrikers of all time. George retired from a playing career and began to consolidate his technique into a book called "The Natural Golf Swing". This book along with his video "The Swing Motion" are what's left for us to study. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1988. He recovered, and was about to make a comeback at the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Senior tournament, but left because he felt weak. The cancer had spread to his brain, and he would die from it in 1989. That left the rest of us salivating for more insight. According to many, his work was left incomplete, since he intended to write more books and was working on a video series.

According to Norm Moote:

Knudson wanted to standardize the way people teach golf. I can remember him saying to me I’ll either do it with the CPGA or with out them. Once he decided to go it alone, his idea was to first do a video, then his book and would promote his methodology by playing on the Senior PGA Tour. He would promote his methodology in the United States which is 10 times the market of Canada. The first and only video he produced back in 1983 called; Natural Golf (not to be confused with Moe Norman’s Natural Golf) was a general instructional video that outlined his methodology in a basic manner. The idea was to eventually produce more video’s that would be in greater detail. The book he wrote “The Natural Golf Swing” along with Lorne Rubenstein in 1988 was much more informative then his video and I think if Knudson lived, he would of produced more video’s and also would've written another book which would have been even better than his previous works.

Fret Not Gotham Golfers, our good friend Martin Chuck has come up with something. Martin, besides being the inventor of the most successful teaching aid on the market (The Tour Striker), is also one of the few people whose game was developed under the direct tutelage of Mr. Knudson. George was Martin's coach from the age of 9 to the age of 19, so in this case you're getting information almost from the horse's mouth. Martin has created a video tribute to Mr. Knudson in which he discusses what it was that George taught him. I believe that this video can be used as a study guide to accompany the book. I have been privy to viewing it and all I can say is "WOW". I would highly recommend it to any serious student of the Golf Swing. Here's a preview:

For $14.95, I don't think you can go wrong, it is available HERE and I highly recommend it.

Here's an old Pamphlet I found online with Knudson describing his move. (click on the image to enlarge)

The Secrets of owning your swing by EA Tischler

Here's our friend EA Tischler with an in depth look at the varying stroke patterns and their components. This stuff makes a whole lot of sense. I've always been a firm believer in incorporating components from different methods to come up with the best fit scenario for the individual golfer. I'm not sure that this is what EA is trying to project here, but his system is surely taking into account each golfer's individuality.

Hitting it Straight

Last week I was screwing around with my Driver on Rick Nielsen's "Flightscope", and for the life of me I couldn't figure out why I was hitting a hook. The ratio between my angle of attack and my path was almost exactly 2:1, yet I was still hooking it. It finally dawned on me that for the driver the ratio is 1:1, so for every degree you swing right you need to swing up by that same amount. As I get older I have more and more of these brain farts ;0).
Through years, we've been taught that we should have the same swing for all the clubs in the bag. The more I experiment the more I discover that this is not the case. The reason I was screwed up was because I was applying the same rule of thumb for the driver as I had for the irons.

This topic was covered in depth by Fred Tuxen in his pamphlet:
The secret of the straight shot .

Anyways, here's a video which better describes what I was encountering.

Patrick Cantlay an analysis by Dan Whittaker

Today we're going to have Dan analyze the Golf Swing of Superstar Amateur Patrick Cantlay.

First here's his bio from Wikipedia:

Patrick Cantlay (born March 17, 1992) is an American amateur golfer who is currently a sophomore at UCLA. He is currently the number one golfer in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. Cantlay was born in Long Beach, California. He resides in Los Alamitos, California and attended Servite High School. In 2011, Cantlay helped the UCLA golf team to win four tournaments. The Bruins were first in stroke play before losing in the match play of the NCAA Championship. He won the 2011 GCAA Division I Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award.[1] Cantlay was also the National Freshman of the Year, winning the Phil Mickelson Award in addition to being the Pac-10 Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.[2] Cantlay qualified for the 2011 U.S. Open. He was one of three amateurs to make the cut along with Russell Henley and Brad Benjamin; rounds of 70 and 72 over the weekend ensured he was low amateur.[3][4] His back nine 30 was the best in the tournament. He was also low amateur at the 2011 RBC Canadian Open, finishing in a tie for ninth place. On June 24, 2011, Cantlay set a course record 60 at the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut.[5] Then on July 1, 2011, he made the cut at the AT&T National and he finished the tournament at 13-under-par in a tie for 20th place as the low amateur. Cantlay won the Southern California Amateur at the San Gabriel Country Club on July 10, 2011. Most recently Patrick lost in the final match Western Amateur to Arkansas Senior Ethan Tracy.

Manaserro's Footwork an Analysis by Dan Whittaker

Today we're going to have Dan explain some much overlooked concepts with regards to footwork. I've always said that Homer Kelley missed the boat when he didn't define pressure points under each of the feet. Most of us don't realize the difference good footwork can make when it comes to ball striking.

I recently received the following email from blog follower and youtuber, Thorsten from the U.K.:

Golf Swing
Hi Ralph, i watched your (actually Dan's) analysis of Martin Kaymers golf swing and i was absolutely amazed what you explained in that video. I was yesterday on the range as well and made a couple of videos myself but i am not sure what i can improve to become a more consistent ball striker. Here are my latest videos and hopefully you can read something out of it, giving me some advice. :-)
